Plateau State Govt launches campaign to end violence against children

A large number of children came all out last Thursday, in Plateau State, to back the launch of the campaign to End violence Against Children Organized by the Plateau State Ministry of Women Affairs and social development in collaboration with technical Working Group up on violence against children.
A document obtained  at the occasion revealed that millions of children in Nigeria suffer physical, sexual and emotional violence every year, as failure to invest in tackling violence against them might lead to substantial social and economic losses, estimated at 2.8 per cent of Gross Domestic Product, hence the need for the prevention and effective response to violence against children, leader of tomorrow.

The occasion which took place at the Crest Hotel in Jos, the state capital, with the theme “it’s time to take action together let’s end violence against children”, was sponsored by UN women, USAID, UNICEF, European Union, United states centre for disease control and prevention (CDC), US President’s emergency Plan for AIDS Relief and led by National Population Commission (NPOPC) respectively.
Some of the significant problems being faced by children, according to the document included the low rates of disclosure by victims, of their experiences to the authority to pick up the case for them, and the complication of the parents, poverty and the lack of trust of the security among others he the situation has continued unabated.
It was also revealed that, approximately, 6 out of every 10 children experienced some forms of violence, where half experienced physical and sexual violence as well as emotional violence by parent, care givers or adult relative, which have a serious impact on children’s physical and mental health.

Those who presented their goodwill messages which included the state commissioner for justice, Barr. Jonathan Mawuyai, the representative of the Federal Commissioner National Population Commission, Sale A Gahmbuzai, who is the state Director NPOPC, saw an urgent need for parents, Federal and State government as well as MDAs, NGOs, FBOs, Media, Communities, families and children to join hands to fight violence against children
