Your
Excellency, Comrade Sidney Daman SUG
PRESIDENT University of Jos
I am one among the many who believes
that”the worthiness of life is deep rooted in the service of mankind”.
The above mentioned quote therefore should be the practice of every leader and aspiring leader for excellence in leadership. Mr President, this letter is born out of my ardent concern for our union, its leaders and our numerous students. Some of these students I have had the opportunity to speak with
and also have
listened to and I must confess that 75% of our beloved students have lost faith
in Unijos Student Unionism especially those students who were around during
Comrade Abel’s (AKA Abel is able) era as SUG president of our great
institution. After the protest, the University administration decided to give
the final blow to student unionism in Unijos. (Read how the blow was givenhere). Sorry to say this but it is nothing but the gospel truth which must be
told. I don’t mean to be flippant but you and your Exco members are nothing but
figure heads that are just there so that it won’t be said that Unijos does not
have a student union government. I believe you took that forceful covenant and
oath that the former VC Prof. Hayward and his cohort made us to take. The above mentioned quote therefore should be the practice of every leader and aspiring leader for excellence in leadership. Mr President, this letter is born out of my ardent concern for our union, its leaders and our numerous students. Some of these students I have had the opportunity to speak with

With that
document still in existence, no student has the right to protest any draconian
policy or increment in school fees. Mr. President I just want to let you know
the implications of that oath just in case the thought of protesting any future
increment might come to you or you excos.
A saying goes thus that “every
onlooker is either a traitor or a coward”. I am very sure my fellow Josites and
myself are not onlookers nor cowards but great people who want the best for our
beloved institution, future leaders who look up to you and your executive for
leadership skills they will apply in the future to better our society. Mr
President, if there is anything that made Comrade Abel to be loved by students
is his inclusive government. Abel tried as much as possible to see to it that he carried all students along. This he did by organizing congress of
Faculties Presidents, Departmental Presidents and even Class Representatives. This
action gave students a sense of belonging and the feeling that our opinion is
appreciated. Mr. President I will advise that your copy this strategy that was
adopted by Abel. If you feel you can’t have all faculties together, then I will
suggest you schedule days to meet with different faculty reps. Mr President, I will
also suggest that you should please create avenues within some period in office
to listen to your students and ensure you pass their reasonable advice as
recommendation to your amiable executive because time is of essence.
Mr
President, I want to commend you and your executive for bringing back
the school shuttle it is a welcome development because it will go a long
way to cut our transportation cost. Mr. President I will also plead on
behalf of students who are residing off campus that provision for campus
shuttle should be made for them. I pray that unlike previous SUG
executive, that this campus shuttle will be sustained.
The
choice of making this note an open letter is not to have a war of words neither
is the open letter begging for reply. It is so that history will have it that we are not onlookers because the
human life ends when we begin to keep quiet, therefore be mindful Mr President
that the entire Josites are waiting for your account of stewardship.
About
few months ago during the manifesto your Excellency made promises to innocent
listeners. Innocent they are because everyone came there to listen to voices
that will bring change and so far I think it is high time you make it visible
to the blind and audible to the deaf which among your promises you made during
your manifesto you have kept. Outline them and be rest assured that faith will
gradually return to our revered Union.
Redeem your good name. However, I
understand that this letters will give room for open discussions and criticism
but am sure it is for the good of our government moreover, if we do not speak
out with courage; who will? On this note however, I believe I have made my
points clear enough. My support remain with the union whether about to fall or
already fallen and be rest assured that if the need arises I will forward more
letters to your office. The struggle continues till things get better. ALUTA
CONTINUA, VICTORIA ACERTA.
Yours faithfully concerned Josite
GOD BLESS UNIJOS
