THE Plateau State government has given up till the end of
December this year for people with illegal fire arms to surrender them to
security agents before the law takes its course.
Governor Simon Lalong gave this order while receiving on a
courtesy call members of the course 14 of the Nigerian Army College of
Logistics, Lagos led by its commandant, Major Gen. Joseph Orokpo at Government,
House, Rayfield, Jos, Monday.
Lalong who was represented by his Deputy, Professor Sonni
Tyoden, said amnesty followed his invitation few weeks ago by the commissioner
of police to inspect some illegal fire arms recovered by the police.
The governor noted that the proliferation of arms was a
serious threat to the peace and security not only to the state but the country
as a whole.
He further explained that the amnesty granted was not an
open one and as such would end on 31st December this year and those still
caught with arms after the window period would have themselves to blame.
He used the occasion to commend the Joint Security Task
Force popularly known as operation Safe Haven, the Nigeria police and other
security agencies for their efforts in the restoration of peace in the state.
Lalong also stated that his administration was willing to
collaborate with the Nigerian army to ensure the revitalization of the
agricultural sub-sector in order to make it more viable.
He noted that Plateau State which was endowed with human and
natural resources has the capacity to provide food for personnel’s of the Nigerian army
especially the Northern-East ravaged by the insurgence.
