Farooq Kperogi: Buhari’s phantom $500M donation to Clinton’s campaign

by Farooq A. Kperogi
In the aftermath of Donald Trump’s emergence as America’s president-elect, fringe, dodgy, clickbaity Nigerian websites have invented a transparently fake but wildly viral story that President Muhammadu Buhari donated $500 million to the Hillary Clinton Presidential Campaign, and that this “fact” would strain relations between Nigeria and the United States next year when Trump is sworn in as president.
I initially ignored the story because I didn’t think anybody with even the littlest brain cell in their head would believe it. But the lie has now taken a life of its own; it is being shared and reshared on multiple social media platforms and has become a talking point in many online conversations. Many people,

My S3X Life with my Neighbour's Daughter (EPISODE 3)

….. It was from this torturously slow pace that, in no time at all, I climaxed into her. I was kind disappointed in myself because I didn’t actually enjoy the sex the way I wanted to. I felt for her because she didn’t achieve orgasm.
When I was pleading with her immediately my phone rang immediately I woke up behold it was a dream. As I woke from this lovely and sweet dream of mine I realize that my boxer was covered in my sperm. I had to go into the bath room to wash myself up and get ready for evening football training.

Mass Comm Project: Students Perception of Western Television Programmes(Part Nine )

ECONOMIC RELEVANCE OF CULTURAL IMPERIALISM TO THE BROADCAST MEDIA IN NIGERIA
Considering the fact that the sole aim of establishing any media enterprise is profit oriented, most media establishments tend to patronize more of western media content because it is cheaper to buy foreign media content than to produce  local programmes. In doing this, the broadcast media saves some reasonable amount of money for other purpose. Importing foreign media content also saves a broadcast media establishment the cost of sending correspondence outside the country of its operation get news story.
EFFECTS OF FOREIGN CULTURE ON THE LIVES OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS
Rattle by the current stiff competition by the television stations, the Nigerian television industry has continued feeding viewers with foreign programmes at the expense of

2.7       REASONS FOR CULTURAL IMPERIALISM IN NIGERIA
There are a lot of reasons for cultural imperialism in broadcast media in Nigeria.
FINANCE: The economy of the country is not in a good shape due to mismanagement and outright corruption. The financial crunch resulting from the bad economy acts like an incubus on television especially with regard to such programmes that involve huge financial stakes. Mid January, 2006, ten (10) broadcasting organizations (including some television stations) were closed down by the NBC for failure to fulfill their financial obligations to the commission, to enable the renewal of their broadcast licenses (Osakue and Elo, 2010). According to Silas Yisa (then Director General of the Commission) “after a mutually agreed decision in which the affected broadcasters were to pay half of the amount owed, most of them still refused to pay their debt, some as old as the day the stations commenced operations” (personal communication, January 19, 2006, cited in Osakue and Elo, 2010).  In a situation like this, the broadcast media may find it impossible to do their own programmes.

2.6       THE CONCEPT OF CULTURAL IMPERIALISM THROUGH THE BROADCAST MEDIA
The term imperialism occurs in different spheres of our human endeavours. The term Imperialism is associated with political, economical, social and cultural domination by a powerful nation over a less powerful nation. In this case, they western countries (developed countries) appear to be dominating the third world countries that happen to have inadequate technological power to compete with these technologically advanced countries of the world.
A man’s pride lies in his confidence and his personality is greatly nurtured in his culture. Man is essentially the product of his culture; it beats and moulds a person into a particular shape. Culture makes one speak, dance, think and behave in a particular way. As soon as a child is born, nature assigns him the task of actualizing himself through culture; it is culture that makes one Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba, Kanuri, Tiv, Eggon etc. Nigerian youths are the most vulnerable victims of cultural imperialism. Most of them can no longer speak the Nigerian local languages. Our mode of dressing has been totally distorted by western civilization through foreign films and broadcast media content. Today

2.4       The Concept of television viewership
TV programmes are design and packaged to attract and retain audience viewership interest and the same time influence behavioural attitude.
This account for why TV performs socializing functions as well as social control functions
Nwosu (2004, p.32) explained the social change intent/focus of TV foreign programme thus:
The culture, politics, the sophistication of society has crime about principally through communication of forces knowledge, influence and development.
Through TV programmes issues are raised and agenda is set for discussion which helps in the formation of public opinion and influence.
It therefore suffices that the consistent repetition of foreign TV programmes either soap operas, talk shows etc set raise an issue for public debate for the purpose of opinion formation, attitude change and impact.

2.3       The concept of TV programming
Programming is the basis of TV messages transmission. TV message content is packaged disseminated in the form of programmes. The act of TV programming according to Duru (2002,p.134): “Is a segmental activity that presumes organization materials into a coherent programme service suitable to the target audience”.
Every TV programmes must be thus be packaged to carry out the functions of the press. Explaining these functions, Nwosu (2004, p.31-34) noted the following:
Importance in the discussion and debate, importance on social control, importance in social change, importance in industrial complex.
Analyzing the advantages of TV at carry out the afore stated functions Nwaeze and Nkoli noted

CHAPTER TWO
LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1     INTRODUCTION

The world information flow controversy is perhaps the most topical issue in international communities today. This global controversy is basically about the demand by the south for a change in the present pattern of information flow between it and the north. The south also knows that the third world or under developed or developing countries of the world contends that there is gross unbalance both in quality and quantity, in global information flow between the south and the north, also known as the first world countries of the world.
This unbalance according to the south has placed it at the receiving end as developing countries are daily bombarded with information and other media materials which do not meet their development needs and more importantly tend to debase their culture and portray them as inferior in the eyes of all.

1.3       STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
There is no doubt that western television programmes have offered a lot of meaning and purpose to the social lives of Nigerian students. Some students see them as a way to shake up and release tensions. Some others value their entertainment functions and some see them as a way to keep in touch with the so called latest fashion trend.  Whichever way the youths perceive western television programmes, is an indication of their bias against local programmes.

CHAPTER ONE
1.1       INTRODUCTION
Communication is the transmission of a message from a source to a receiver (Baran, 2009). Communication is the engine room that sustains the existence of the human society. Communication is also the motor and expression of civilization and human activity. This view of communication has been identified with the writing of Political Scientist Harold Lasswell (1948). He said that the convenient way to describe communication is to answer these questions: who says what, through what Channel, to whom and with what effect?
