Classroom collapse kills 4-year-old pupil in Abuja

The collapse of a classroom block at Monsil Nursery and Primary school Kado, Life Camp has killed a 4-year-old Nursery 2 pupil, Daily Trust reports.
The incident occurred at about 10am on Wednesday morning while the children were on break.
The boy was said to have been sitting on the corridors when part of the mud building collapsed on him.
The Municipal Zonal Education
officer, Mrs Gani who expressed shock over the tragedy, said the school had been sealed a month ago, saying it was opened in defiance to the official directives.
“I was surprised this morning when I was told that this is what happened. We came here and sealed off the school and told the owner that the school should not be opened, but out of defiance they went ahead to open the school and this is consequence now’’ she said.
Director, Department of Quality Assurance Mr. Ayuba Dadem said the proprietor will be prosecuted.
“As government I have already reported it to the commissioner for education and definitely we are going to take the matter up as seriously as it is today.
“We have not stop sealing schools, and we will not. We will start prosecuting now, we’ll take them to court, jail them when one or two proprietors get to know what government is doing, then they will take us seriously’’ he added.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Life camp police division, Muhammad Rabiu who confirmed the incident, also said the proprietor of the school Mr. Uba Ogbonnah had been arrested.
