From GYANG PAM, Yola
VICE Chancellor of Modibbo Adama University of Technology (MAUTECH) Yola the Adamawa State capital Professor Kyari Mohammed has faulted government’s stoppage of admission into Management Sciences and related disciplines in specialized universities saying it was hasty, ill advised.
According to Kyari, specialized universities were so called because they are expected to give special attention to the core programmes of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
Kyari stressed that it does not preclude their running programmes in Management because Science, Technology and Engineering need to be managed effectively for it to impact society.
This he noted, was what is obtained in all universities of science and Technology around the world.
He further said, “besides this is a region just emerging from a grueling insurgency that is expressly anti-education, requires access to education of all sorts.
The decision according to him would reduce the institutions intake by one third with deleterious consequences for peace, security and national development, adding that the worse affected category would be female students.
Professor Kyari reminded the President that currently less than 20% of the university’s students were female and more than half of them were in the School of Management and Information Technology.
He quickly added that the policy if implemented to the latter will reduce female population to less than 10% with adverse implications for gender mainstreaming, girl-child education and national development.
MAUTECH started in 1981 and the Federal government ensured that the newly established university took off with Management, Earth Sciences and Pure Sciences as the core courses.
“These courses were the first to be introduced and the foundation upon which the university was built,” he pointed out.
The Vice Chancellor however appealed to the Federal Government to reconsider the decision, assuring that the university would give emphasis to the programmes in Science Technology and Engineering while providing needed knowledge to the people.
Professor Kyari also appreciated the Federal Governments initiative for the rehabilitation, reconstruction and development of the North East following the degrading of the capacity of the insurgents and the establishment of the North East Development Commission.
He reminded the President that less than 10% of the 4317 hectares of the campus land is fenced.
Kyari further appealed for the fulfillment of the promise by Governor Muhammadu Bindow to construct a ten kilometer road in the university a promise he said was made in 2015 even though the Governor has been constructing roads all over.
In his speech Governor Bindow who was represented by his deputy, Engineer Martins Babale said when they came in, they met collapsed infrastructures.
He however assured that with prudence and his administrations zero tolerance for corruption they will overcome all challenges.
A total of over 5,000 students were graduated and were presented with their certificates on the spot.
