The Plateau State government said it would develop the tourism sub-sector to serve as an alternative source of revenue instead of depending on federal allocation.
Governor Lalong stated this when the Association of Tourism Practitioners of Nigeria {ATPN} led by its President, Alhaji Kabir Malan paid him a courtesy call at Government House Rayfield, Jos Thursday. Represented by his Deputy, Professor Sonni Tyoden, Lalong said Tourismoccupied a central position in the developmental aspirations of his government.
Lalong said as a government, his administration would provide the enabling environment for Tourism to flourish, coupled with the fact that Plateau was a tourists destination Governor Lalong explained that the economic situation in the country has made government to look beyond oil which used to be the only source of revenue.
Lalong however expressed optimism that the association has a lot to offer in terms of tourism development, describing the composition of the team as a reservoir of talents, adding that government would welcome any contribution aimed at developing the tourism potentials of the state. He used the occasion and appealed to the outside world now that peace has returned.
President, Association of Tourism Practitioners of Nigeria, Kabir Malan said they were in the state to appreciate the giant strides the state government has achieved in its peace efforts as it was crucial to the tourism development.
Kabir disclosed that ATPN was established in 1990 and has beeb in the vanguard of promoting and facilitating the participation of the private sector in the development, marketing, promotion and fostering the needed public much private sector partnership.
He said the state was the hub for tourism in Nigeria which placed her in the most advantaged position to lead in the development of the tourism industry in the country noting that this has made it expedient to engage the government in the areas of mutual collaboration with the view to attaining global best practices.
The president appealed the state government to set up committees at the LGA levels in order to drive community tourism in line with the law setting up the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC) and acknowledged the role of the state in the provision of tourism infrastructure and human capital delopment.
