University don urges on peace building clubs in schools

A Lecturer with the Department of Theatre and Film Arts University of Jos, Dr. Reuben Embu has stressed the need for secondary schools to set up peace building clubs, in order to forge for oneness in their respective schools in the country.
Dr. Embu who is the Principal Investigator, Peace Building Project, University of Jos, disclosed this at the institutions peace building programme for secondary schools, held at the Open Air Theatre of the institution, last Thursday.
He said the project was an initiative of the University of Jos in partnership with TETFUND, which it hoped to explore and channel the students, creativity towards consolidating the peace on the Plateau and beyond.


He maintained that, the essence of the research was to create education for sustainable peace and development through the arts and building in the children the need for unity, patriotism citizenship as well as the love for the future of the country.
The University Don noted that, if the children imbibe the culture of living in peace at the early age, the future would no doubt be bright for all, adding that, peace was priceless, saying that, without it nothing works.
Dr. Embu noted that, the country has been polarized along religious, ethnic lines which he said needed to be bridged for any meaningful development to take place, saying that, Nigeria has had a fair share of different crises as a nation.
He affirmed that, the presentation and performances by the students in the area of poetry, music, songs, drama, choreography and debate among others help in bringing people together.
He further explained that, the aim of education was to promote the growth and development of students to become healthy, caring well rounded and grounded individuals who accept and advocate social justice as well as equity for all.
Dr. Embu disclosed that, the particularly schools selected from both government and faith based private schools, and described the participants as peace ambassadors and assured that they would be preaching peace.
He equally appealed to the government to as a matter of concern include peace studies in the civic education curriculum, if it was not there and encouraged inter-schools activities so that positive messages could be shared for the sake of sustaining peace.
He thanked the staff of the department, principals and teachers of the participated schools for their tremendous support.
SUNDAY STANDARD reports that, the participated schools were Infant Jesus Academy, Jos GSS Laranto Jos, St. Louis College, Jos FGC. HIKMA Secondary School, Jos GSS Chwel-Nyap, Jos CIS Bauchi Road, Jos GSS Naraguta Jos, Command Day Secondary School Jos and Baptist High school Jos.
